How to Compress a PDF and Reduce File Size (Without Losing Quality)

SnapPDF Team·

A PDF that is too big will not attach to an email, fails to upload on a government or job portal, and eats your phone storage. Compressing makes it smaller while keeping it readable. This guide explains what makes PDFs heavy and how to shrink yours in under a minute.

What makes a PDF big?

  • Images and photos are the number one reason. A scan or a camera photo can weigh several megabytes per page.
  • Scanned documents are often saved at a very high resolution that nobody needs on screen.
  • Embedded fonts and extra data add a little more.

Text on its own is tiny. That is why a 100-page text document can be smaller than a 3-page scan.

How to compress a PDF in SnapPDF

  1. Open the Compress PDF tool and add your file.
  2. Choose a level (see below).
  3. Optionally turn on grayscale if you do not need colour. It makes scans smaller still.
  4. Press the Compress PDF button.
  5. Download the smaller file. You can see how much space you saved.

Which level should you pick?

LevelBest forWhat to expect
LightDocuments you will printImages stay near print quality. Smaller file, very little visible change.
RecommendedAlmost everythingImages are reduced to a clear on-screen quality. The usual choice.
StrongStrict upload limitsSmallest file. Photos look softer, text usually stays readable.

Start with Recommended. If the file is still too big, run Strong.

Tips to get the smallest file

  • Compress once. Compressing the same file again and again gives little extra saving.
  • Compress at the end. Merge, edit and sign first, then compress the final document.
  • Split big files with Split PDF if a portal has a size limit and compression is not enough.
  • Scans: try grayscale for black-and-white documents. It often cuts the size a lot.
  • Scan at lower resolution next time. 150 to 200 dpi is enough for reading on screen.

Will my text stay sharp?

Yes in most cases. Compression mainly works on images, so words stay crisp. Only the Strong level can make photos look softer.

Is it private?

Your file is encrypted while it travels and while it is stored, and it is deleted automatically, by default within 2 hours. We do not read your documents or use them to train AI. Details are on the privacy page.

Frequently asked questions

Which compression level should I choose?

Start with Recommended. It keeps pages clear on screen and usually gives a big saving. Choose Strong only when you need the smallest file, and Light when print quality matters most.

Will compressing make my PDF blurry?

Light and Recommended keep text and images clear. Strong lowers image resolution, so photos can look softer, but text usually stays readable.

Why did my PDF barely get smaller?

Some PDFs are already optimised, or contain mostly text. There is little left to remove. Try the Strong level, or reduce the images in the source document.

Is my original file changed?

No. You get a new, smaller file. Your original stays as it is on your device.
