How to Split a PDF into Separate Pages or Parts (Free, Online)

SnapPDF Team·

A 200-page report is hard to share, and sometimes only one chapter matters. Splitting a PDF cuts it into smaller files, so you can send, print or store just the part you need. Here is how to do it in a minute, for free.

When to split a PDF

  • Share one chapter or one section instead of the whole book.
  • Separate a scanned batch where one file holds many documents, such as ten invoices scanned together.
  • Stay under email limits by sending a large document in several smaller parts.
  • Print only what you need instead of the entire file.

How to split a PDF in SnapPDF

  1. Open the Split PDF tool and add your file.
  2. Pick how to split:
  3. By page ranges: type exactly what you want, for example 1-3, 4-7, 8.
  4. Every N pages: set N to 5 and a 20-page file becomes four files of 5 pages.
  5. Press the Split PDF button.
  6. Download the parts one by one, or all together as a ZIP.

Split into individual pages, separate one page, or split into two

The same tool covers all the ways people phrase this:

  • Split into individual pages: choose "every N pages" and set N to 1. Every page becomes its own PDF.
  • Separate one page from a PDF: enter just that page number as the range, for example 5.
  • Split a PDF into two parts: enter two ranges, for example 1-10, 11-20.
  • Split several parts at once: list as many ranges as you need, separated by commas, and each one becomes its own file.

How to write page ranges

You typeYou get
1-3One file with pages 1, 2 and 3
1-3, 4-7Two files: pages 1 to 3, and pages 4 to 7
5One file with only page 5
1-3, 8Two files: pages 1 to 3, and page 8

Use a comma between parts and a dash inside a part. Page numbers are the numbers of the pages in the file, counted from 1, not the numbers printed on the paper.

Split, extract or remove: which one?

  • Split gives you several files at once.
  • Extract pages gives you one new file made of the pages you pick.
  • Remove pages keeps the document in one piece and deletes pages you do not want.

Tips

  • Preview first. Open your PDF and note the page numbers before you type the ranges.
  • Keep the parts in order by naming them as the tool does: they come back numbered.
  • Make the parts smaller still with Compress PDF if you plan to email them.
  • Put them back together later with Merge PDF.
  • Password-protected? Use Unlock PDF first.

Is it private?

Yes. Your file is encrypted in transit and at rest, nobody reads it, and it is deleted automatically, by default within 2 hours. See the privacy page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF into single pages?

Choose the "every N pages" mode and set N to 1. Every page becomes its own PDF and you can download them together as one ZIP.

How do I write page ranges?

Use commas between ranges and a dash inside a range, for example 1-3, 4-7, 8. Each range becomes one file.

Do I get the parts as one download?

Yes. When the result has several files you can download them one by one or all at once as a ZIP.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

First remove the password with the Unlock PDF tool, then split the unlocked file.

How do I separate one page from a PDF?

Enter that single page number as the range, for example 5, and you get a new PDF with only that page. The original is not changed.

How do I split a PDF into two parts?

Use two ranges, such as 1-10, 11-20, or pick every N pages with N set to half the document. You get two files.
