How to Convert PDF to Word and Edit It (Free, Online)
You received a contract, a form or a report as a PDF and now you need to change it. PDFs are made for reading, not editing, so the easy fix is to turn the PDF into a Word document. Here is how to do it well.
Three conversion styles
SnapPDF offers three ways to convert, because "looks the same" and "easy to edit" pull in opposite directions.

If you plan to change the text, choose Text. If you only need the same look inside Word, choose Layout. If a PDF has special fonts that convert badly (for example Urdu Nastaleeq slides made in PowerPoint), choose Image.
How to convert a PDF to Word
- Open the PDF to Word tool and add your PDF.
- Choose Text, Layout or Image.
- Press the PDF to Word button.
- Download the .docx file and open it in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs.
Scanned PDFs: do OCR first
If you cannot select any text in your PDF, it is a scan, which is just a picture of paper. First run OCR PDF to add a text layer, then convert the result to Word.
Tips for a cleaner result
- Use the original PDF, not a photo or a screenshot saved as PDF.
- Complex layouts (many columns, text over pictures) may need a little tidying afterwards.
- Password-protected? Use Unlock PDF first.
- Need it back as PDF? Use Word to PDF.

Frequently asked questions
Will the Word file look exactly like my PDF?
The default Text style gives real, editable paragraphs, headings, lists and tables, but not the exact page design. The Layout style looks closer to the original but is harder to edit.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?
A scan is only a picture, so run OCR PDF on it first. Then convert the searchable result to Word.
Does it work with Urdu or Arabic?
Right-to-left text is marked correctly in the Word file. Results are best with PDFs that contain real text, not scans.
