How to Convert a PDF to JPG or PNG (Free, Online)
Sometimes you need a page of a PDF as a picture: to drop into a presentation, post on a website, send in a messaging app that does not show PDFs, or edit in an image editor. Converting it takes a minute.
JPG or PNG: which one?
| JPG | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Photos, scans, pages with many images | Text, diagrams, screenshots, logos |
| File size | Smaller | Larger |
| Sharp text edges | Slightly softer | Crisp |
If your page is mostly text, PNG looks cleaner. If it is a photo-heavy page, JPG keeps the file small.
How to convert a PDF to images
- Open the PDF to JPG tool and add your file.
- Choose the image format: JPG or PNG.
- Choose the resolution (dpi). See the table below.
- Type the pages you want, or leave the box empty for every page.
- Press the PDF to JPG button, then download the images. Several pages can be downloaded together as a ZIP.
Which resolution should I pick?
| Resolution | Good for |
|---|---|
| 72 to 100 dpi | Small previews and thumbnails |
| 150 dpi | Viewing on screen, slides and the web (a good default) |
| 200 dpi | Sharper screen use and light printing |
| 300 dpi | Printing and detailed pages |
Higher resolution means a sharper picture and a bigger file. Pages that would become an extremely large image at the chosen resolution are refused rather than shrunk quietly, so pick a lower dpi if that happens.
Convert only the pages you need
You do not have to convert the whole document. Enter ranges like 1-3,5 to export only those pages. This is useful when you only need a cover, a chart or a single table.
Tips for a better result
- Use PNG for pages with small text so letters stay crisp.
- Use 150 dpi first, and go higher only if the result looks soft.
- If you need the pictures to be small, convert as JPG at 100 to 150 dpi.
- To go the other way, use JPG to PDF.
What if I want editable text instead?
An image of a page cannot be edited as text. If you want to change the words, convert the PDF to a document instead with PDF to Word (read our guide to converting PDF to Word).
Is my file safe?
Your file is encrypted in transit and at rest and deleted automatically, by default within 2 hours. See the privacy page.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose JPG or PNG?
Choose JPG for photos and smaller files, and PNG for sharp text, diagrams and screenshots.
What resolution should I choose?
About 150 dpi is enough for viewing on screen. Use 300 dpi if the images will be printed. Higher values create larger files.
Can I convert only some pages?
Yes. Type the pages you want, such as 1-3,5, or leave the box empty to convert every page.
Do I get one image per page?
Yes. Every page becomes its own image, and several images can be downloaded together as one ZIP file.
